The Hedgehog cage must:
- Bare Minimum Requirement: 4 square feet (the more, the better!)
- Have a solid floor as wire bottoms can catch a hedgehog’s tiny paws and easily break or injure them.
- Single level hedgehog cages are recommended. Hedgehogs have a very poor eyesight and although multi levels can give them more space, it is not often a good idea. If cage has multiple levels, it’s recommended that the ramps be enclosed (such as a large PVC pipe, wire, Coroplast, etc.)
- Adequate ventilation. They must have access to clean and circulating air.
- Be in an area that is free from drafts. No one (including hedgehogs) like to be in an overly drafty spot. This can cause your hedgehog to get sick.
- Be in an area with of the home with consistent and stable temperature.
- Safe & Secure. Hedgehogs can climb, believe it or not. So it’s important that if you decide to use a metal cage that there is a secure top to prevent escape. If you have other household pets, or small children, a top also helps keep the hedgehog safe from possible harm.
guinea pig/rabbit cages
This is the most popular choice for hedgehog cages. The floor is solid and easy to clean, they can't climb out, and certain wheels can be attached to the bars of the cage. The size must be equivalent to a rabbit or guinea pig size. Hamster and rat cages are too small. Stick to one level cages. If the cage has a ramp, you can remove it, or lower it to a safer height.
C&C Coroplast cages
These are adjustable, affordable and easy to manage. They can be expanded easily to provide more room and are fully ventilated. It is best suitable for adult hedgehogs. A base and higher sides have to be provided so the hedgehog doesn't climb/escape. Though I have not used these myself, they are becoming more popular in the hedgehog community as you can use your imagination to design the shape and size of the cage.

plastic container bin
Plastic containers are the most cost affordable way to house your hedgehog. They range from $10-$20 and are easy to clean. The bin which I recommend the most is the 105L storage bin from Canadian Tire. It is deep and escape proof so you don't need to use the lid, and larger than most cages.(seen in last pic) Some people will customize the sides or make additions to the cage using a tube or PVC.
Aquarium/ terrarium
I do not recommend aquariums. The sides tend to stay cold. It is heavy and need a large tank for proper size. I have seen people use terrariums which have had some custom adjustments done. Please remember that if you are using a habitat which was previously used for a reptile or snake, please clean it very well. They can carry salmonella and if transmitted to your hedgehog, it can lead to death within 48-72 hours. I would also stay away from unfinished wood products.
